Well, we’re officially 11 days away from November 1st, and November 1st means an entirely new event for me. November is National Novel Writing Month, and this year, I’m going to write an (at least) 50,000 word novel in the month of November. This is going to be a HUGE undertaking, but I’m really excited about it.
What will I be writing for my novel? The plan, which I don’t expect to change, is that I’m writing a science fiction novel. This is going to be called Overture and it is about humanity’s first travel into deep space using a near-light speed engine. I’ve actually been planning this for months, and I know what I’m wanting to do. I’ve got two fantastic leads I can’t wait to start writing for, and I’ve got a whole universe to play with. What more could a writer ask for?
This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I wrote all throughout college in spurts but didn’t finish any novels or scripts that weren’t projects. Well… Ok, I didn’t finish ANY novels at all. Most of them didn’t stand up to my standards for more than 5 seconds, and then I’d junk them. I did finish my first non-school script earlier this year, though I don’t see it ever leaving my laptop. It’s a spec for Regular Show and I love how it turned out. Now, I think it’s time for me to go ahead and try something genuinely hard. Writing an entire novel in a month is going to be a massive challenge that I’m really excited to take on.
To those around me, I just need you to know that for the majority of the month (Thanksgiving will probably be my one break day unless I magically hit 50k words early), I’ll be mostly incommunicado outside of work. I’ll be hunkered up in my room with tea, hot cocoa, or both, and I’ll be typing on my laptop with a fury never seen previously. I’ll be keeping phone calls to a minimum, I’ll be spending break times, maybe catching a TV show or going to see a movie. Twitter is going to be ignored a lot more, as will tumblr, and Facebook will start to fall back into the phase where I won’t be updating on there again. Don’t expect to see or hear much from me. One thing I’m going to try and do though is that I’m wanting to update this blog at least once a week, if not more often when I can find the opportunity, to let people know my progress. I’ll put my word count, and how I’m feeling with the novel at that point. You can comment on here or on twitter or on Tumblr, and I guess on Facebook as well, though I really don’t see me responding on Facebook.
Also, a word of note to those who ask (there are a couple of you), I’m not doing this for money. I’m making exactly zero Dollars ($0.00) on this project, and I’m writing this so I can sell it off as soon as I’m done with it. I’m not writing this so I can move myself to get a paycheck for writing. I’m writing this for writing’s sake. I’m writing this for enjoyment. I’m writing this to hone my skill. I’m writing this to write it. There’s nothing else to it.
It’s going to be a massive undertaking, but I’m really excited to see where I’m going to go on this. There’s a lot of time before then though, so if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go re-work the third act of the book.
