Today is the day that my original Xbox finally breathed its last breath (at least as far as I can tell). I have a lot of great memories associated with it. From when I bought it from a family friend back in 2004. He gave me a terrific deal (considering I was a kid that earned a bit of summer money and that’s all I had). The Xbox, two controllers, a memory card, and six of the launch games. I was one of the happiest people you could’ve seen in my high school. And the reason why I was so adamant to get an Xbox that year?
It was the year Halo 2 released. I had been getting Game Informer magazine at the time, and I had been hearing nothing but buzz for the game, which just made me froth at the mouth for it more and more. That year it was what I asked for for Christmas and for my birthday. It was all I could think about. I saw the ads all over TV and saw the preview online on Gamespot’s E3 coverage. And then that fateful winter, something amazing happened. I got Halo 2 for my birthday.
That ended up being one of the best nights I’d ever had up to that point, and the absolute best birthday I’d ever had. I had a bunch of my friends over, and a night of nothing but rotating Halo, pizza, and just all around hanging out. I remember it so well because the last birthday I had attempted with friends years before hadn’t gone well, but that’s a story filled with sighs. Maybe I’ll share it one day.
Still, I played that system as much as I could. It ended up getting more playtime than my PS2 ever did (although I did have some MASSIVE Squaresoft RPGs that I played on there that added a significant amount of hours). So many memories, so much fun. I’m gonna see what I can do about it, and see if there’s any way I can save it. I don’t want to loose it if I don’t have to. Wish me luck.
